The Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism is a meaningful moment in each person's faith journey and a sacrament central to our Christian faith. At Clarkston United Methodist Church, we celebrate baptism as a sacred covenant between God and God's people.

A Sacred Moment
In baptism, God's unconditional love and grace are celebrated. The Holy Spirit is acknowledged as always working in our lives because we belong to God. Whether for an adult making their own faith promises or a child whose parents make promises on their behalf, baptism marks the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith.
The United Methodist Church recognizes baptisms from other Christian churches and therefore does not re-baptize people.
The Biblical Foundation
Jesus' Baptism (Luke 3:21-22)
"When everyone was being baptized, Jesus also was baptized. While he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit came down on him in bodily form like a dove. And there was a voice from heaven: "You are my Son, whom I dearly love; in you I find happiness."
Baptisms are typically scheduled on Sundays other than the first Sunday of each month (when we celebrate communion). To schedule a baptism:
- Complete the online baptism request form
- A member of our clergy will contact you to discuss details
- Attend a brief pre-baptism meeting if needed
- Arrive 15-20 minutes before the service on your baptism day
Family members are welcome to participate, and we'll reserve seating in the front pews for your family.
Who can be baptized?
People of all ages can be baptized at Clarkston UMC, including infants, children, and adults.
What should we wear?
Most people wear their Sunday best, but comfortable clothing is most important. For infant baptism, consider an outfit that makes it easy to hold the baby.
Can we take photos during the service?
Yes, though we ask that you refrain from flash photography during the service. You're welcome to take photos after the service, and the pastor will be happy to pose with your family at the baptismal font.
Do I need to be a member to be baptized or have my child baptized?
While membership is not required, we encourage at least one parent to be a member or in the process of becoming a member when baptizing a child.
