The JOY Of...

Joy is a Christmas word. “Joy to the World, the Lord is Come”. Yet joy seems so hard to find and even harder to capture. Joy feels to many like a serendipitous moment that overtakes you and leaves as quickly as it arrived. We seek for joy in this season but we often have to settle for being briefly happy. We want to find joy and peace but often put ourselves in places this month of stress and exhaustion.

But Joy is a Christmas word. It is also a Christmas possibility. When the angels first told the shepherds about the birth of Jesus they said, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord.” The great joy was defined not because of the emotion of the moment. It did not exist because all stress and conflict had been erased. It was simply that Jesus was born. Joy comes from the knowledge that Jesus is here.
